I found this video over on Parkdale Pictures and it blew me away. I've listened to the tune many times, but seeing Miles & Trane et al. perform it live makes it that much better...

I didn't like Coltrane's performance on the album. Let me take that back, when I hear Coltrane on the album it makes me want to put on a Coltrane album... because he has way more going on than I think he was willing/permitted to put into that recording.
However, seeing the performance here has changed my mind a bit... it really swings.

I agree with what you're saying about Coltrane holding back, but I think why I like Miles Davis so much, particularly around this time, was that within the confines of the style, so much is going on. We know they can all do more, but the restraint gives the music a coolness that, say, freeform jazz could never ever ever have.
